Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Lent-ing season. What is Lent? Lent is the 40 day (weekday) period between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday (the day before Easter). It's a time in which the Christian Church is devoted to fasting, abstinence, or penitence; remembering during this time of the time Jesus spent fasting.
I've celebrated Lent in the years past by giving up meat, make-up, secular music, even Facebook. This year, I'm already a vegan, so giving up meat is nothing sacrificial for me. However, I've found myself becoming inthralled in Facebook, in the regards of not particularly caring for it. I've been trying to decide if deleting it is something I want to do, and I'm hoping to find some answers during these next 40 days. In addition, I'll be giving up Twitter; they're pretty similar. I've also been trying to figure out if giving up make-up is something I'm being called to do. I'm not normally consumed by my make-up, but I've definitely been using it on a very constant basis, which I don't really like.
In giving up these things, I'll also be adding some things. I'm going to be more intentional in my relationships. I think this will be something that will come with not having Facebook and Twitter, not being constantly connected. I'm going to be blogging more regularly also! I'd like to blog everyday about what's going on with Lent, maybe providing some scripture along the way. And most importantly, I'm going to be spending more time with God. I'm a very busy person, and I find myself making excuses about my time (or lack there of) with God, which must stop.
I'm super excited about Lent this year. I learn a lot about myself and I grow in my faith. I have a lot of things to bring to the table with God. A lot of time will be spent praying and listening. I'm also excited about my roommate who will be celebrating sans Facebook with me!
Here's my new profile pic for the next 40 days:
Are you celebrating Lent this year? If so, how?
